A Manitoba First Nations leader says he believes U.S. president Barack Obama could be persuaded to sign onto the U.N. declaration affirming Indigenous rights.
Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation chief Terrance Nelson is one of seven First Nations chiefs from western Canada in Washington, D.C. this week.
Nelson says if the U.S. does sign on to the declaration, that will make Canada one of the last remaining holdouts.
“It will be Canada standing alone, almost,” Nelson says.
Onion Lake chief Wallace Fox is also part of the Canadian delegation in Washington today.
