The chief of the Chaykostaypasin First Nation says his band is closing in on a land settlement with the federal government.

Calvin Sanderson explains that the Indian Claims Commission recently heard oral evidence from elders within the band about how land was taken from them by the federal government over 70 years ago.

Sanderson says the current federal election may hold proceedings up somewhat, but he expects an announcement to come within the next eight months.

Sanderson admits wondering about whether a change of government would interfere with the settlement his people are seeking.

Sanderson says the land they’re seeking is located near Birch Hills.

Chaykostaypasin currently has 800 band members.
