Saskatchewan Metis leader Clem Chartier is the new president of the Metis National Council.

The vote took place at the MNC’s annual assembly in Winnipeg earlier today.

Chartier was voted in by acclamation.

Chartier is currently the president of the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan. He has 3 months to relinquish those duties with the MNS.

Chartier says his first priority is to press various levels of government to implement the recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the Aboriginal rights of the Metis.

The MNC had been under the leadership of interim president Audrey Poitras (POY-truh) ever since former president Gerald Morin was forced to resign early this year after being charged with assault following an incident in an Ottawa hotel last December.
