The first wave of students to complete a new course on Aboriginal land management was honoured yesterday at the University of Saskatchewan.

2007 marks the first year the Indigenous Peoples Resource Management program has been offered at a Canadian university.

Instructor Terrence Pelletier says the course is aimed at giving First Nations the chance to develop their own land managers on reserve

He says the course will give students the knowledge needed to deal with investors who come along and want to develop their land.

The course was developed at the request of Indian Affairs, who want to see certified land managers on each reserve.

Pelletier adds 24 more students are signed up to take the next class, which begins on April 30th.
