Censure Of FNUC Still A Real Possibility

The president of a regulatory body says the First Nations University of Canada could still face censure from his group.

James Turk of the Canadian Association of University Teachers says he’s encouraged by a recent meeting he had with FNUC officials, but there are still questions over its governance model.

Turk says the school must take more steps to separate academics from politics.

The FNUC has invited Turk and others to attend a board of governors meeting in September.

Turk says that’s a step in the right direction, but can’t shake the feeling school officials don’t believe anything is wrong with their governance model.

He says he wishes the FNUC had adopted the recommendations laid out by an all-chiefs task force a few years ago.

According to Turk, the school has a few more months to examine its governance practices, before his group reassesses whether or not to censure the school in November.
