Casino Funds To Go Toward Community Projects

The Northern Lights Community Development Corporation presented the city of Prince Albert with a cheque for $125,000 today.

The money will go towards four projects in the community, including the replacement of a skating rink on the east side, three new defibrillator units, garbage cans and a van to help with a day care at a high school.

Eddie Head is the manager of the corporation, which supports northern initiatives with funds received from Saskatchewan’s on-reserve casino profits.

Head says the money is the first installment of a five-year, $1-million deal announced in April.

He notes the corporation has given the city the authority to spend the money as it sees fit.

But he says at the end of the day, the city has to tell them where the funds are going, and Head says they want to make sure local residents benefit from the money.

“The citizens of Prince Albert, the grassroots, are the people that deserve the dollars,” Head says.

Meantime, some of the donated money has already been directed towards the city’s pow-wow.
