The B-C Court of Appeal is today hearing the case of a First Nations woman who’s challenging a clause in the Indian Act that prevents her and others from passing on Aboriginal rights to their children.

Sharon McIvor from the Lower Nicola Valley Band has been fighting for more than 20 years to regain her Indian Status, as well as status for her children.

Last year, the B-C Supreme Court granted her children status, but the federal government appealed the ruling.

Her case has the potential to restore the right to Indian Status to more than 30,000 First Nations women and children.
