A caribou expert from Manitoba says better education is needed for young hunters to know how to properly manage Canada’s struggling caribou herds.

Ross Thompson, secretary-treasurer of the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq management board, explains that the numbers in the Beverly herd are critically low right now, perhaps in the tens of thousands.

He says younger and newer hunters should remember to target adult males when hunting and let the females (cows) go.

Thompson says the board is asking communities to keep a careful count on how many Beverly caribou are being harvested, until their numbers rebound to traditional levels.
