Caribou Hunters Warned About Using Planes

Saskatchewan Environment has a warning for caribou hunters and owners of small aircraft in northern Saskatchewan.

Spokesman Dave Harvey says the department is aware that hunters will sometimes hire a plane to fly them into a caribou herd.

Harvey says this is definitely an unfair hunting practice and can result in a fine as high as $100,000.

He notes that people that do this usually waste a lot of caribou meat in the process.

He says various individuals have been charged in the past for doing this sort of thing and he promises his department will definitely be acting on any tips it receives.

Harvey admits this practice doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s usually around this time of year when people are storing food for winter and caribou are migrating south.

Harvey says Saskatchewan Environment is working with the Northwest Territories to try to crack down on this type of activity on both sides of the border.
