A Canada Post official says a northern MP’s claims that several post offices are in danger of being shut down are completely false.

Last week, Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Jeremy Harrison issued a news release stating that the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association were convinced Canada Post and the federal Liberals were planning to shut down 15 post offices in Harrison’s northern Saskatchewan riding.

Canada Post spokesman John Caines says the claims are completely false and there is no list of rural post offices that are slated to be shut down.

Caines says Canada Post is solely responsible for the operations — including closures — of all post offices in Canada, not the union.

Harrison listed Denare Beach, Patuanak, Stony Rapids, Uranium City and Weyakwin among the locations he said could lose their postal outlets.
