Calvert Under Fire For Answers About Carriere Case
Friday, March 16, 2007 at 14:32
Premier Lorne Calvert is on the hot seat for apparently contradicting himself relating to when he was first briefed about the Murdoch Carriere situation.
Carriere, who is originally from Cumberland House, is the former head of Saskatchewan Environment’s forest protection and fire management branch.
He was fired after allegations surfaced that he had sexually harassed several female co-workers.
The NDP government has been on the defensive the last couple of weeks over a recent decision to pay $275,000 to settle a defamation suit filed by Carriere – despite the fact a court found him guilty on two counts of assault last year.
Calvert told the legislature yesterday that he hadn’t been briefed about the case prior to when the first media reports surfaced in 2002.
However, later in the day, Calvert told reporters that he had made a mistake in giving that answer – and had actually been briefed about the situation six days before it made the news.
Saskatchewan Party Leader Brad Wall says the premier owes the legislature an apology for misleading MLAs about the issue.
