Premier Lorne Calvert was in La Ronge today to help jumpstart the sign-up drive for natural gas in the community.
Earlier this week, Calvert’s government announced a new financing plan to finally bring natural gas to La Ronge by 2008.
Calvert was front and centre at a SaskEnergy-sponsored “community celebration barbecue” at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre, where Calvert and company served up hamburgers cooked on a natural gas-fired barbecue.
SaskEnergy used the function to provide residents with answers about its natural gas offering in La Ronge, and to give people an opportunity to fill out expression of interest forms.
Meanwhile, the town’s mayor, Joe Hordyski, is excited about the possibilities natural gas will open up for his community.
Hordyski says La Ronge will now become a more desired location for businesses and people contemplating making a move north.
Hordyski notes a lack of natural gas service was one of the factors cited when it lost a bid for a fish processing plant to Prince Albert a few years ago.
