Calvert Addresses Weyerhaeuser’s Timber Rights

Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert has formally accepted a new report on the future of forestry in the province.
The document contains 17 different recommendations on how to improve the struggling industry.
They range from previously-announced initiatives like growing more trees through agro-forestry, to new ones like mandating the harvest of the full wood resource profile.
Calvert says it’s clear to him the timber in the North belongs to Saskatchewan people, and not merely the corporations who own the rights.
He also says if a company like Weyerhaeuser wants to close mills in Saskatchewan, then it shouldn’t expect to be able to hang on to its timber rights.
Another recommendation calls on the government to solicit Aboriginal investment in forest sector growth.
