Call Made For End To Squabbling On Thunderchild

A member of the Thunderchild First Nation says recent political infighting on his home reserve needs to stop.

Harvey Thunderchild is a former human resources worker for the band.

He no longer lives on the reserve, but says too many of the First Nation’s problems are being argued about in public.

In particular, he’s concerned about the accusations that are being made regarding who should have won the band election in late March.

Two men have stepped forward claiming to be chief following an election recount on the First Nation.

Thunderchild doesn’t agree with politics being done through the media, and wishes the opponents could sit down with each other to talk things through.

He says he knows some flaws exist in the band custom election act that may have contributed to the confusion.

Thunderchild notes one of the problems with the act is that it seems to say two different things about how ballots should be marked.

But he says band members should work together to address these problems internally.

Indian Affairs has yet to announce who it recognizes as the rightful chief.
