A by-election is taking place today on the Buffalo River Dene Nation.

The band is preparing to elect a new leader to replace recently-departed chief Louie Chanalquay, who stepped down last month after three-and-a-half years in office.

Debbie Billette and John Montgrand are running for the post.

Former chief Elmer Campbell was also nominated, but eventually declined the nomination.

The winner of today’s vote will serve as chief until February, when a general band election will be held.
