Information about traditional support for people with HIV and AIDS is now available in a booklet.
The booklet, launched today in Regina, is called “Creator Given: Traditional Supports for HIV/AIDS.”
It was guided by nine elders, and includes information about protocols, health and well-being and the relationship between people and traditional plants.
Fidji Gendron, a science professor at the First Nations University in Regina, helped create the book.
She says the book is a tool for people with HIV or AIDS looking for traditional guidance and support.
“A lot of people, when they are sick, they would like to talk to an elder, but they don’t know how to do it. They don’t know the steps, they don’t know the protocol, so the book is like a stepping stone — it talks about what they should do when they want to meet with an elder,” Gendron says.
She says the booklet will be available on-line later this year through the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange.
