Boarding School Survivors Plan To Draft Proposal

Plans are being made to host a conference in Ile-a-la-Crosse next month for survivors of the community’s boarding schools.
Don Favel of the Sakitawak Metis Nation says the purpose of the event will be to give survivors the chance to tell their stories, and also discuss the type of compensation they would like to see from the government.
Favel says the conference will also focus on development of a Metis-specific assessment process, as well as a legal process for compensation.
Favel notes the effects of the boarding school experience still run deep, though, and it’s not something money alone will solve.
He says the plan is to develop a proposal at the conference for the federal government to consider.
The event will take place February 25th.
