Boarding School Survivors Get Compensation Forms

A former student of the Ile-a-la-Crosse boarding school says survivors are confused right now about whether they are about to be compensated for their time at the institution.

Don Favel, the president of the Metis local in the community, says some former students are receiving forms for compensation from the federal government.

Favel says some survivors have filled them out, even though the institution was not included in the list of schools eligible for payouts.

He says he has asked the government to help clarify the situation, but to no avail.

Favel also says he is getting around five calls a day from survivors who want an explanation about the latest developments.

Favel believes Ottawa has bungled the situation from the start, ever since Prime Minister Stephen Harper broke a pledge to compensate survivors.

He says any future election promises to the survivors had better come in writing.

Favel adds diplomatic efforts to force the federal government to officially recognize the boarding school are at a standstill, because business at the Metis National Council has ground to a halt.
