The Bank of Montreal has sent shock waves throughout northwest Saskatchewan with word it will be closing its branches in Ile-a-la-Crosse and Beauval in September.

In notices it has circulated throughout the region, BMO says the outlets will be consolidated into its Prince Albert branch.

Ile-a-la-Crosse mayor Duane Favel notes the bank has scheduled community consultations in the spring — but he says residents should have been consulted before this decision was made.

Favel says his community will definitely miss the service, and he feels especially bad for the elders who have grown used to it.

He adds it doesn’t appear the community will be able to change the bank’s mind about this.

The Bank of Montreal has had a branch in Ile-a-la-Crosse since 2001.
