Black Lake Election Appeal Up in the Air

It’s not clear what will happen next regarding an appeal of a band election in Black Lake earlier this year.

Band members held another assembly this past Friday to discuss the issue, but didn’t hold a nomination meeting as originally scheduled.

A similar band meeting held earlier last month apparently cleared the way for a new election and a nomination meeting.

But since neither the chief nor the band’s electoral officer were present at the meeting in early November, it was decided another assembly would be called with both officials present — which is what unfolded this past Friday.

However, MBC has learned that the returning officer abruptly left Friday’s meeting and the legal counsel for the band was not present.

The two men who are raising the appeal feel the gathering sets the stage for a new election to be held later this month, while the chief and council are promising to consult their lawyer before deciding what happens next.
