Black Lake Closing In on New Election Act

Work continues this afternoon on a new election act for the Black Lake First Nation.

The process to revamp the election act was started following a crisis on the reserve earlier this year.

The band was embroiled in an ugly dispute which saw two groups claiming to be chief and council.

Election act facilitator A.J. Felix says he’s hopeful the new election act will help the band avoid a repeat of that situation.

Felix says a first draft of the new election act has been completed, and band members will be able to make revisions to it in a band assembly this afternoon.

The band is scheduled to ratify the new election act later this week.
