The Prince Albert Grand Council has decided on Birch Hills as the setting for a new youth addictions treatment facility.

CEO Darrell Haysom says the community has agreed to provide 20 acres of land for the building, and notes town council is already on board.

He says he’s not worried that some residents have been circulating a petition asking that acceptance of the centre be voted on next month during civic election night.

Haysom says the vote should settle any objections to its arrival.

Meanwhile, Birch Hills mayor Gordon Dyck says he is confident residents will accept the proposal.

He says those citizens with objections may simply not know enough about the centre.

Once it’s up and running, the youth detox facility will accept 15 clients aged 12 to 17 years of age.

The PAGC tried to establish the centre in the RM of Buckland, but opposition from some vocal residents effectively halted that plan.
