Bigstone Youth Slaying Case Back In Court

A judge in La Ronge will decide this week if four boys accused of killing one of their peers should go to trial.

Preliminary hearings are getting underway today for the four youths, aged 12 to 15, who are each facing a charge of second-degree murder.

They were arrested shortly after the death of 15-year-old Johnny Abel Venne on the Bigstone Reserve last summer.

Venne’s body was found in the Montreal River on July 10th.

Members of the victim’s family carried a picture of Venne into court this morning.

Crown prosecutor Bob Lane says community members in attendance will learn more about the circumstances surrounding Venne’s death through these hearings.

Three days have been set aside for the hearings, but Lane doesn’t think the proceedings will last that long.

The hearings are taking place at the La Ronge Legion Hall.
