A 46-year-old member of the Big River First Nation is dead after a canoe he was in capsized over the weekend at Ness Lake.

RCMP say the underwater recovery team pulled the body of Vernon Harper from the water this morning.

An investigation is currently underway.

At this point, it appears Harper and his nephew were fishing in the lake Saturday evening when their canoe overturned.

Harper made sure his nephew had a floatation device before he attempted to swim to shore — but Harper never made it.
