Big Income Gap Between Aboriginals And Non-Natives

The gap between high-income earners and low-income earners is a “troubling phenomenon in Saskatchewan,” according to a report released last night.

The report says Aboriginal people earn less than 60 per cent of what non-Aboriginal people earn.

Paul Gingrich, a former University of Regina professor, prepared the report.

Gingrich says the greatest gap is between First Nations families on-reserve and non-Aboriginal families.

He says an on-reserve family’s income can be as little as half of what the non-Aboriginal family gets.

The report is based on statistics from 1976 to 2006.
