The incumbent MLA for the Athabasca riding says it’s a shame a debate that was supposed to happen in La Loche had to be cancelled.

Buckley Belanger says the event would have given local residents a chance to get a good look at the people who want to represent them.

He says he was excited about the opportunity, which was supposed to also include the Athabasca candidates for the Green Party, the Liberals and the Saskatchewan Party.

It’s unclear who backed out — but Belanger says if people have aspirations of representing the riding, they should be willing to publicly debate the issues.

Belanger says roads and infrastructure are two of the top issues in the North in this election.

He says paving projects in Pinehouse, Patuanak and other northwestern communities need to be looked at.
