A northern politician believes northern Saskatchewan stands to benefit if the Conservative government changes the equalization formula for the provinces.
Saskatchewan Northern Affairs minister Buckley Belanger says Saskatchewan is in a “have” situation right now, where we do not qualify for equalization payments due to good revenues.
However, he hopes the feds re-calculate how much money is taken from the province each year, noting that one-time mining dollars are still being taken out.
Meanwhile, Belanger is hopeful that money for things like the Primrose Air Weapons Range settlement and the residential school survivors file will be coming soon.
He notes most of the groundwork has already been laid for those objectives.
