A northern Saskatchewan mayor is encouraging residents to share information with a new police squad.

Alex Maurice of Beauval says he hopes community members come together to support the northern drug and gang enforcement unit.

The seven-member squad will begin operations on Oct. 1.

It’s designed to root out criminal activity and disrupt the flow of drugs between Prince Albert and the north.

Maurice says it’s a good idea, but he knows the officers will need ground-level information to be successful.

“At the end of the day, they’re only as effective as the information we give them as community members and as community leaders,” Maurice says.

Maurice says he’s glad the force, which has been talked about for a long time, has finally been given the green light.
