It’s official . . . Joan Beatty has been registered with Elections Canada as the Liberal candidate for the upcoming Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River by-election.
According to Beatty, filing the nomination papers means that the Liberals can now get to work advancing the issues she feels are most important to Northerners.
Beatty says “it’s really great” that the paperwork is finally out of the way, noting that it couldn’t have happened without the signatures of a number of people in the northern Saskatchewan constituency.
Metis activist Jim Durocher has been one of the most outspoken critics of the appointment since it was made.
Durocher says the most recent development is “really devastating to the old-time Liberals” in the riding.
He says a lot of people are “very disappointed”, and adds the Liberals will “pay for this one at the end of the day”.
Durocher predicts the Liberals will lose the seat, most likely to the Tories.
In fact, while he insists he is still a Liberal at heart, he plans to speak with Conservative candidate Rob Clarke to see where he stands on some of the issues.
Beatty says it’s impossible to please everyone all of the time.
