Residents of Spiritwood and the Beardy’s/Okemasis First Nation were within their rights to honour two slain Saskatchewan Mounties, according to the father of one those officers.

Howard Cameron’s daughter, Robin and her partner Marc Bourdages were killed near Spiritwood in July, 2006.

On Tuesday, Curtis Dagenais pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.

Dagenais’ lawyer, Bill Roe, says Beardy’s and Spiritwood residents have given the impression the constables were heroes by naming schools and arenas after them.

Howard Cameron sees nothing wrong with doing that, and asks, “What else can we do?”.

Dagenais has applied to have the case tried outside Battleford — in Saskatoon, if possible.
