Bear Shot In Meadow Lake

A bear spotted in a tree in Meadow Lake has been shot by conservation officers.
RCMP and conservation officers were called to the scene at about supper time Tuesday night.
RCMP spokesperson Sergeant Carole Raymond says the decision to kill the bear was made for a couple of reasons.
For one thing, it was in an angry mood, and thus a danger to the public.
Secondly, she said, if conservation officers just tranquilized the animal, it would fall out of the tree. A fall from 20 feet up would injure it so much that it would have to be put down anyway.
Raymond has had experience with these kind of incidents with cougars in B.C.
She says the decision to kill the animals is not taken lightly, but it’s done for the welfare of the public and the animal.
Raymond notes the area where the bear was spotted was in the city. It was close to an elementary school and golf course, so officers were concerned for the public’s safety.
