The Battlefords Tribal Council and the City of North Battleford have agreed on the broad outlines of a land swap.

The deal allows the city to develop a $51-million multi-purpose recreational facility.

It will be located just north of the Gold Eagle Casino, and will have links to that facility.

Final details of the swap still have to be hammered out.

But city manager Jim Toy says the deal is strong enough that the tribal council is allowing some work to begin on the land.

BTC spokesman Wayne Semaganis says his tribal council is pleased to do a deal with the city. He says it will help everyone.

“I think this is a big step in terms of race relations in the city of North Battleford, for the city and the local First Nation to truly work together on such a big project,” Semaganis says.

The multiplex will feature at least two and possibly four components, including an aquatic centre and a performing arts centre.
