Bart Tsannie Elected As Hatchet Lake Chief

The new chief of the Hatchet Lake Denesuline Nation says openness and transparency will be a key part of his office over the next two years.

 

Bart Tsannie is beginning his first official day as chief of the First Nation, after defeating incumbent leader Rosalie Tsannie-Burseth yesterday.

 

The final voting tally saw Tsannie winning decisively — 398 votes to 115.

 

He says he looks forward to working with everyone and pledges to keep local members informed about what’s going on.

 

He also feels that communicating with members, and consulting with them about what is going on at the band leve,l are both very important.

 

Meantime, six people join Tsannie on the band’s council.

 

They include incumbent councillors Ed Benoanie and George Tsannie, as well as newcomers Louis Josie, Jack Thomas, Annie Joseyounen and Jean Besskkaystare.
