The Cumberland House Cree Nation is suing the federal government over compensation costs related to the flooding the community experienced in the summer of 2005.

According to a statement of claim filed in Court of Queen’s Bench in Regina last week, the band is demanding over $371,000 in restitution for what it claims is a broken government promise.

The lawsuit claims Indian Affairs officials assured the band its costs to evacuate its residents two summers ago would be covered.

Roughly 600 residents were forced to flee the community.

Chief Walter Sewap has told the Saskatchewan News Network that the legal action comes after unsuccessful negotiations with the federal department.
