Band Exploring “Home Ownership” On Reserves

A new initiative of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band could see band members owning their own homes on-reserve one day.
Band councillor Henry McKenzie says the initiative is scheduled to be launched this year.
McKenzie points out the idea is to help working residents acquire equity and maybe even get enough cash together to own a second house or start a business, if they wish.
McKenzie says, right now, they’re simply trying to gather as much feedback from band members as possible.
McKenzie also wants to make it clear this endeavor should not be viewed in the same light as a social program, as it would allow residents to claim a house for themselves.
