Band Councillor Accused In Hit And Run

A band councillor with the Clearwater River Dene Nation is in hot water after allegedly being behind the wheel in a hit and run last month.

Gerald Hainault was arrested on December 30th, the day following the alleged collision with another vehicle containing children.

No serious injuries were reported in the accident.

The Mounties say Hainault is charged with impaired driving, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and five counts of breach of an undertaking.

Hainault’s undertaking dates back to October, when a judge ordered him to keep the peace, abstain from alcohol, and to be of good behaviour.

Some band members feel Hainault should be removed from office, or at least suspended.

A band official, who didn’t want to be identified, says a charge is different from a conviction — and if Hainault is convicted, the situation will be dealt with accordingly.

He also says anyone in this situation is considered innocent until proven guilty.
