A First Nations author says he believes Canada’s Conservative Party is on the right track with the formation of its own Aboriginal caucus.

Yesterday in Ottawa, four MPs and two Senators were officially inducted into the fledgling group.

Calvin Helin spoke at a reception attended by several Tory supporters and members of the media.

Helin, who is a well-known advocate of self-reliance for First Nations in Canada, says the caucus reflects how quickly Aboriginal issues are moving into mainstream politics.

He hopes moves like this help shape a new reality between Aboriginal people and the rest of Canada.

However, Helin is not sure whether or not it will help the Tories shake the stigma that they’re not Aboriginal-friendly.
