The author of a new book about wrongs committed against the Woodland Cree says it was a recent event that prompted her to write the account.

Maggie Siggins says “Bitter Embrace: White Society’s Assault on the Woodland Cree” is a detailed look at how the white people tried to erase the culture of residents in the Pelican Narrows region.

Siggins says it was the recent arrest and conviction of James Michael Bomeck — a lawyer convicted of sex offenses in that area — that initially sparked her interest in doing the work.

Siggins says it is amazing how well the Woodland Cree have managed to preserve their culture considering the damage that was done.

She is currently on a cross-country tour promoting her book.
