An ATV accident on the Ahtahkakoop First Nation has claimed the life of a 4-year-old girl.

The RCMP reports the girl was one of three young kids who were riding a trailer hitched behind an ATV early last night.

The ATV was being driven by an 11-year-old boy.

At some point, the trailer separated from the ATV and overturned.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Brad Kaeding says, at first, the victim didn’t appear to be hurt. But less than half an hour later, her family noticed she was showing signs of medical problems.

She was taken to the nearest hospital in Shellbrook, where she died from her injuries.

Kaeding says it doesn’t appear the ATV was being driven at a high speed or in a reckless manner.

He says it’s not believed any of the children were wearing helmets.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The girl’s name won’t be released until permission is granted by her family.
