Attempted Bribery Of Court Witness Backfires

An attempt to prevent a woman from testifying has backfired for a North Battleford man.

Instead, Kevin Petit has been convicted of obstruction of justice.

Petit is now serving a 17-month sentence for the crime.

It all stems from a preliminary hearing on a home invasion. Two men were alleged to have threatened a woman with a sawed-off shotgun.

In the end, the case didn’t go to trial anyway.

The Crown said it didn’t have enough evidence to prove that Petit took part in that incident.

But Crown prosecutor Mitch Piche says in the course of those proceedings, the bribery case came to light.

He says while in remand, Petit asked friends to bribe the woman not to testify.

The Crown has dropped the home invasion case for now, but has reserved the right to bring it back later.
