The Fond du Lac and Black Lake First Nations have signed a letter of intent to jointly purchase a passenger plane with Transwest Air.

Both bands already lease planes to the company, and hope a deal will be finalized this fall to add a SAAB 340 to the mix.

Fond du Lac Chief Allan Adam says with the recent demise of Norcanair, there is a real need right now for increased seat capacity in the Athabasca region.

Adam says the cost of the $1-million plane will be split three ways.

Adam says this sort of arrangement with Transwest Air also provides some economic spinoffs back to the bands.
