A uranium mining company operating in the province’s North has been awarded a new license from the federal regulator.
AREVA has won an eight-year license for its operation at McClean Lake, as well as its Midwest Project, which is located 15 km away.
Company spokesman Alun Richards says AREVA decided to combine the two operations under one license to make things easier for future applications.
He says they’re hoping to begin mining ore from the Midwest area and processing it at McClean Lake within the next few years.
However, for that to happen, they need market conditions to improve, says Richards.
“There’s two things: one is the price of the uranium, and the other thing is the cost of actually developing the project. It’s a very large, expensive project, and when these two (factors) match up, we’d like to move ahead with that,” he says.
Richards says a “purpose-filled” road will be used to transport the ore from Midwest to McLean Lake.
