Angus Weighs In On Northern By-Election

An Ontario NDP MP is urging voters in northern Saskatchewan not to avoid his party in Monday’s by-election because of its Opposition status.

Charlie Angus — who helped bring national attention to the troubled Kaschechewan reserve — argues Opposition MPs are sometimes in the best position to do the most good for their riding.

Angus says the Tories and Liberals would have voters believe otherwise — but he says an MP with the governing party has limitations on what he or she can do or say.

He also takes issue with the Liberal position that it was the NDP that cost Aboriginal Canadians the Kelowna Accord when it helped bring down the previous government.

He says the Liberals had 13 years to come through with that kind of funding for Native people — and only did so when they were on their political “deathbed”.
