The life of former Assembly of First Nations national chief David Ahenakew will be featured this weekend on CTV’s Indigenous Circle.
The idea to do a documentary on Ahenakew’s highs and lows came from the show’s advisory committee.
Indigenous Circle producer Nelson Bird says the idea wasn’t immediately welcomed by everyone because of Ahenakew’s controversial remarks seven years ago regarding the Holocaust.
Bird says it wasn’t his intention to ask Ahenakew why he said what he did . . . but says Ahenakew does answer that question in the documentary.
Bird is looking forward to reaction following the airing of the documentary.
He has already received feedback, with some people saying it’s good to highlight the work Ahenakew has done for First Nations people — while others say Bird is wasting his time.
Bird most looks forward to the reaction of Ahenakew himself.
The documentary, “Ahenakew: A Man of His Words”, airs at 6:30 Sunday night on CTV’s Indigenous Circle.
