AFN Discusses One-Member, One-Vote System

Chiefs from across the country are in Gatineau, Quebec today for a special assembly on renewal at the Assembly of First Nations.

They are there to discuss potential changes to the organization that were recommended in a report late last year from the AFN’s Renewal Commission.

The recommendation that has received the most attention is the call to allow every status Indian the opportunity to vote in the election for national chief.

Incidentally, the current term for AFN chief Phil Fontaine runs out this summer. There is a chance a one-member, one-vote system might be in place in time for that election — if it’s approved by the nation’s chiefs.

Fontaine has already indicated he will be seeking re-election.
