The provincial government is opening up its affordable housing program to more northerners.

The home ownership option will now be open to the communities of La Ronge, Air Ronge, Denare Beach and Creighton.

The initiative offers homeowners a one-time forgivable loan of up to $19,500.

Roger Parenteau, the director of Northern Housing operations, says they are also expanding the program to include more workers with moderate incomes.

Effectively immediately, the maximum income limit used to determine eligibility for provincial housing programs in the North is being increased from $49,500 to $62,000.

The provincial government says the increase is in response to changing market circumstances, most notably rising housing costs.
