The provincial government has announced it will pave 11 km of road near the Big River First Nation.

The work will cost $2.5 million, and will help connect the existing Cyr Road to Highway 55.

First Nations and Metis Relations Minister Maynard Sonntag made the announcement.

He says a lot of teamwork went into the initiative, noting this is the first time in Saskatchewan that a band, the provincial government and a municipality have agreed to cost-share a project like this.

The First Nation and the province have also agreed to lobby Ottawa to pave the remaining 8.5 km of gravel road sometime in the future.
