Protesters who’ve been picketing the courthouse in Melfort, say vigils and marches will be held to protest the acquittal of a 26-year-old man on sexual assault charges.

Jeffrey Kindrat looked relieved and his family gasped with relief after a jury found him not guilty of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in the Tisdale area in 2001.

Protester Marlene Baer says she’s not going to let this acquittal go, adding that the jury’s decision was “ridiculous”.

On the girl’s home reserve on the Yellow Quill First Nation, Chief Robert Whitehead says the verdict will affirm what many people already believe.

He says the justice system isn’t working for aboriginal people.

Kindrat was one of three men involved in the incident.

The Crown alleged the men got the girl drunk then tried to have sex with her after pulling their truck off a country road.
