Ten outstanding Aboriginal youth were recognized for their achievements Friday evening in Saskatoon.

The 10th Annual SaskTel Aboriginal Youth Awards were handed out in categories such as technology and science, sports, spirit, and leadership.

Tamara Mirasty won the award for excellence in education.

The Grade 12 student has an overall average in the mid-90s, including a 98 per cent average in calculus, and is in the top one per cent of students at St. Mary High School in Prince Albert — all while raising a 10-month-old daughter.

Mirasty says she is very focused on her daughter’s future, and adds she wouldn’t have achieved such a high academic standard without the help of her parents.

Over 100 Aboriginal youth have been similarly honoured since the awards’ inception.
