Aboriginal Languages To Be Showcased In Regina

Regina’s first-ever Aboriginal Language Festival will be held tonight.

It takes place at 6:30 p.m. at Scott Collegiate. Admission is free.

Organizer Cathy Wheaton says the purpose of the festival is to showcase Aboriginal languages.

The festival will also highlight the talents of about 12 students who have been learning various languages and dialects through a speaking circle, which began in April.

Wheaton says tonight’s festival will be very interactive.

First, students in the speaking circle will show off their talents, and then members of the audience will be encouraged to get on stage and speak the Aboriginal languages they know.

Prizes will be offered.

Wheaton modeled the festival on similar festivals held in places such as La Ronge and Prince Albert.
